Museum celebrates 50 years

 

(Quay County Sun) The Tucumcari Historical Museum will mark the 50th anniversary of its grand opening with four events that organizers hope will spark children's interest in local history and bring back memories to those who were there when the museum opened.
Cindy Lathrom, a member of the museum's board of directors, and Joy Young, a former board member and longtime volunteer, last week sat down in the museum's Herman H. Moncus Memorial Annex to talk about the museum's history, its sprawling collections, its upcoming events and its future. Continued

Amarillo Museum of Art to host cast iron art preview

(KFDA) The Amarillo Museum of Art will be hosting a cast iron art preview at the end of the month called Burning Ring of Fire: 20 Years of Cast Iron Sculpture in Tucumcari, NM.

For the past 20 years, as many as 50 artists from around the United States have convened in Tucumcari, New Mexico for week long workshops making cast iron sculptures.

The AMoA exhibition will be featuring artworks from artists and students who have participated in the cast iron workshop in Tucumcari.

Artworks will include three-dimensional cast iron objects, photographs, prints and more. Continued

Auction of Billy the Kid-related items rides into Santa Fe

 

(Santa Fe New Mexican) Billy the Kid, an outlaw, a legend and a New Mexico cottage industry, rides the range still.

Items relating to the Kid will be displayed and auctioned this weekend at the 29th annual Cody Old West Auction and Cody Old West Show at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center.

This is the first time the events have been held in Santa Fe, said event founder and Santa Fe resident Brian Lebel. Estimates for the coming sale total more than $1.4 million. Continued

Several events are planned today and Saturday to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of Bosque Redondo — signed in 1868 — and the preceding 25 years of hardship the Navajo and Mescalero Apache people faced. Continued

Museum to honor treaty's anniversary

 

(Eastern New Mexico News) FORT SUMNER - Time can bury many things, but healing truly begins when more people remember a tragedy. So say officials organizing an event commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of Bosque Redondo.
From 1863 to 1868, the U.S. military removed 9,500 Navajo and 500 Mescalero Apache from their homelands and imprisoned them on a 1,600 square mile reservation near Fort Sumner. The Bosque Redondo Memorial sits on this site as a reminder of the tribes’ hardships and resilience through it all, said Bosque Redondo Memorial Director Aaron Roth. Continued

Iron Pour marks 20 years

 

(Quay County Sun) More than 40 artist from across the country, residents and local fine art students will take part in the 20th Annual Iron Pour March 4-10 at Mesalands Community College.
"It seems like just yesterday, we were trying to get this event going; now here we are 20 years later," said D'Jean Jawrunner, event coordinator.
Jawrunner said this year's event not only marks two decades of success. It will also commemorate the dedication of the newly renovated Fine Arts classroom and Foundry building at Mesalands. Continued

Route 66 Air Tour slated Saturday

 

(Quay County Sun) A fleet of small planes will launch Saturday from the Tucumcari Municipal Airport, flying above the Mother Road through New Mexico into Arizona to kick off the Route 66 Air Tour.
The air tour winging its way across the state will highlight aviators, aircraft, and significant historical events along Route 66, said Tour Coordinator Richard L. Perry.
Perry said tours like this one are older than the 90-year-old road itself, fixed-wing aviation pilots have been flying air tours to exhibit aircraft capabilities and share their passion for aviation. Continued

(Albuquerque Journal) A faded amber program trumpets the 1917 opening of the “Temple of St. Francis and the Martyrs/The New Museum of Santa Fe” beneath a familiar image of its towers overlooking the Santa Fe Plaza.
It’s now known as the New Mexico Museum of Art; the longer title dissipated as this repository of some of the finest art in the state became known as the Art Gallery of the Museum of New Mexico.
This linchpin of Santa Fe style is celebrating its 100th anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 25. The festivities will include the opening of three exhibitions, a major face-lift and a community birthday party scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend, as well as a yearlong series of public programs. Continued

Atlatl takes weekend spotlight

Blackwater Draw National Historic Landmark and Museum will host its 17th annual atlatl competition on Saturday morning before the 13,000-year-old Clovis Man archaeological dig site moves into the spotlight that afternoon.
The atlatl event, held at the site six miles north of Portales at 508 NM 467, will allow modern man to try his hand at the ancient spear-throwing device. Continued

Lincoln National Forest to host National Public Lands Day event

 

(USFS) The Lincoln National Forest will host a National Public Lands Day event at Sleepy Grass Campground on September 30 from 9 am to 1 pm. This is a special day to celebrate something we all share – our public lands!
 This is a volunteer-based event and participants can be involved in a project that will include: installing tree shades over freshly planted trees (seedlings) and possibly working on improvements to the campground or adjacent area. People who turn out for the event can even adopt one of the seedlings and receive a special recognition certificate signed by Smokey Bear. Continued
