Not all failure

It's easy to think of this last great homesteading rush as a fool's errand, futilely farming tiny plots on arid ground, but that would be an oversimplification.
An experienced, savvy, dryland farmer, who came in early on, had a good decade or two of good weather and strong prices to prove up his land, raise a family, sell out to a wealthier neighbor, take his profits and move on to greener pastures. And many did just that.
