Dogs of the Pioneers

The dogs that came west with the homesteaders didn't always look like Old Yeller or Lassie, oftener they looked like the dogs pictured here: Rat Terriers. Descended from English Feists, they found a welcome place in America. By the turn of the 20th century, Rat Terriers were the most popular dog in the U.S. What made them popular, especially with farmers and ranchers, is in their names, they were ratters, far better at catching rats than other dogs or even cats. So the next time you see one of these little guys, show them some respect, for they too, followed the wagons.
