Kenmore, Kemps, and Cold-cuts: Our First Summer in Tucumcari
Well, that's the hottest June I've ever experienced. We had quite a time trying to cope with the heat.
First, we bought a swamp-cooler, but being from a very humid section of Maryland, a machine that cooled the house by spitting all over the place just served to remind us why we left Chesapeake Bay country to begin with.
So, we went down to the K-Mart and bought ourselves a little window Air conditioner, an 8,000 BTU Kenmore, and for it's small size, it really cools down our little house.
Still, when it heated up to over a hundred and stayed there, day after day, things got uncomfortable. Anyone who says "But it's a dry heat!," should be stuffed in a warm oven until they promise to never say that again.
Then, we put a moratorium on cooking and got some cold-cuts at Lowe's, making Italian subs for several meals. That's also where we discovered that Kemps sells a full gallon of chocolate marshmallow ice-cream for $7.50. Good ice-cream on a hot day is a wonderful thing.
And that's how we're coping. The guy next door said, "Wait 'till you see July and August, that's when it really gets hot." Hotter than 108? I hope he was pulling my leg. I guess there's always the Dakotas.
