The Tucumcari Historical Museum is located 5 minutes off I-40, or a minute off old 66, in Tucumcari, New Mexico. It's a pleasant place, chock full of artifacts from the region's heyday as a homesteading boomtown, and of course, its Route 66 glory days. A nominal 5 dollar donation is requested and it's well worth the money.
The building itself served as the first high school in the area, then as a way-station for dustbowl refugees, and then as a teaching facility for the AAF during WW2.
A note of caution: the museum website states two different hours of operation, the correct one is 9:00 am to 3:00 pm., Tuesday through Saturday.
