(Santa Fe New Mexican) It is not clear at what date the first drummers, or traveling salesmen, appeared in New Mexico. The earliest specimens of the trade came from the East, initially on stagecoaches by way of the Santa Fe Trail. After 1880, they traveled in relative comfort on the newly opened Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway.
